Adult Learners

At HLC we have an incredibly broad range of full time, part time and short courses - all designed to help you learn new skills, gain qualifications to enhance careers prospects or just discover something new.

Whether you are aiming for a promotion, looking to start afresh with new skills, or there’s a particular qualification you need, we can help you.

From entry level through to Higher Education, foundation degrees and professional qualifications, our courses are carefully designed to give you the skills employers need.

Our tutors have a wealth of industry experience which is supported by the state-of-the-art facilities available at our campuses. This combination of elements enhances the learning experience of our students and provides a quality environment in which you can learn.

Free government-funded courses

We offer a number of courses to adults for FREE, as part of two government schemes. These give you the opportunity to train and gain valuable in-demand skills to help shape your future.

Level 3 qualifications (National Skills Fund)
Maths and numeracy courses (Multiply - Skills for Life)

Full time courses

With most of our full time programmes actually being only 3 days per week, we find that many of our adult learners are able to combine their studies with part time work.

Part time and short courses

We offer a wide range of part time and short courses - both leisure and legislative. These can be found under their relevant subject headings on our part time course listing page or browse the full range using the links below.

Higher Education

HLC offers an Access to Higher Education course which is ideal for those wishing to return to education after a break and progress to study at university level. The course runs during family friendly hours and is an excellent way to make a new start.

We offer a variety of Higher Education courses at HLC providing students with the opportunity to study locally, offering good value for money and increased flexibility for those with work or family commitments.

Fees and financial support

Course costs vary considerably, as only some receive a government subsidy. We strongly advise that prospective students call the College to confirm the latest costs. For further information visit our Fees Guidance page. If the costs are concerning you, don't miss information on Advanced Learner Loans. Most learners aged 24 and over, studying at level 3 and above, will qualify for these loans. From September 2016, learners aged between 19 and 23 years will also qualify for a loan if they already hold a qualification at level 3. It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there is no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over £25,000 a year.
